Run to Love Myself

One of my passions is health. It’s a passion that comes and goes but right now I feel like it’s here to stay.

So on that note, I started another blog. It focuses on beginning to run and staying healthy. Lots of fun tips, reviews and cool things I find around the internet.

Please follow my new blog {run to love myself} and see where my new path takes me.

Important Realization

All this time I’ve been waiting for major life goals to begin when my mental health was in a better place. But my mental health won’t be okay until my life goals begin.

Article: Ten Triggers of Emotional Eating

Found an interesting article on triggers of emotional eating. I feel like there’s a lack of understanding in society when it comes to emotional eating. Some may assume a person just needs to watch what they eat or just has some self control issues. But as with any other eating disorder, there is a lot more behind the food. And I feel people have an easier time understanding the deeper issues behind anorexia or bulimia than overeating and emotional eating.

So you can find the article here summarizing ten triggers to emotional eating. I don’t think it’s a full list, but it’s a good place to gain some understanding.

Colour Me Hippo

August 18th was the day the Color Me Rad run came to Canada. And the day I completed my first official run, even if it was just a 5K I didn’t do so well at because my friends dragged my hiking two days before (note: still bitter).

Shawna, Paul and I — known as team Hungry, Hungry Hippos — went out to UBC dressed all in white, like so:

and ended up looking like so:

Each colour station along the run was like a big party, with friends and strangers laughing and throwing colour at you. That being said, it tasted gross and I had troubles seeing but it was worth the fun.Plus, I laughed every time I coughed out colour.

And I survived a 5 km run! When you finish, the end is one giant party with music, water and colour.

Plus, this run raised money for the Keep A Breast Foundation, so not only was I helping myself but I was also helping support a powerful, local organization. Score times two!

I can’t wait to do this again next year (new annual tradition in the making!) and keep team Hungry, Hungry Hippos alive. Plus, next year’s goal is to do a half marathon! Time to get back to the gym and some delicious eating.

Just to look like this again:

Megan: 1 The Chief: 0

In the beautiful lands of Squamish, BC there is a mountain known as The Chief. With three peaks and multiple areas where you must forge your own trail, making it to the top of the third peak will go down as one of my most proud accomplishments. I had no idea what I was in for when two of my friends dragged my lazy-wanna-be-active butt out on that Thursday morning, this was no hike I was used to. Yes there were stairs and easy to navigate trails, but there were also rocks with no end in sight that I had to crawl over. Then at times I had to crab walk on my way down. I’m a little bitter I was given no heads up on this but I don’t know if I would have gone with foresight.

It took a while and a great amount of patience from two wonderful friends, but I made it. I can only begin to describe the feeling of accomplishment, satisfaction and peace I felt at the top of that beast of a mountain.  There was a beautiful view and it was amazingly quiet. It was so much to take in during such a short time. A year ago, let alone four months ago, I never would have been able to make it much further past the stairs. It proved my hard work and dedication was finally beginning to pay off. I can honestly say, if you’re needing a reason to motivate yourself into becoming healthy, the moment you realize how far you’ve come is more worth it than you can imagine. And being able to realize this while enjoying the beautiful outdoors was like a cherry on top of my healthy sundae.

The Chief: Third Peak - 702 m (2,303 ft)

I wish I could have had my DSLR for parts to grab some good photos but the iPhone had to do.
