Alcatraz Island, San Francisco

This past August I visited Alcatraz Island in San Francisco on a night tour. It was the definition of hauntingly beautiful. I am fascinated by the history and stories of the island. I also was extremely excited to take the opportunity to photograph the island. The whole set can be viewed on my Facebook page but the following are a few of my favourites.

Jessica and Logan: 1,054 photos later

I am back from vacation, back in my own apartment and tomorrow I am back to school. Yippe (note: half sarcasm, half genuine).

Now back to blogging, lets get my butt in gear!

A couple of months ago I did an engagement shoot for an old friend and her fiance. I have to say, it was one of the most interesting experiences for me. First off, it was my first shoot of this magnitude and importance. Second, it was like the second or third time I met the fiance and I made him take part in a long day of posing. Finally, after taking 1,054 photos I then had to choose which ones made the cut to edit (took 1-2 weeks). Then I had to edit the photos I liked. After finally settling on 89 photos, I carefully edited each photo. Gave me a great chance to experiment with different styles but I had no clue it would take as long as it did.

Now these two were adorable! I found the only way to make Logan cooperate was to have him as close and cuddly with Jessica as creatively possible. And I can remember as we traveled all over Vancouver for the perfect photos there were countless quotes and stories I want to share. Now I’m kicking myself for not writing this until I finished editing because I forget all of them. Cute couple though, and that shines in their photos.

Congrats to Jessica and Logan, I can’t wait until next August!

These are some of my favourites from the shoot:

{Loved the tile outside the Sharadon Vancouver, but within a couple of photos they kicked us off!

Of their drive through area! I was so upset!}

The mostly complete set can be seen on my Flickr account.

Stories of Value: Photos of Faith in Action

A warning to all of my close family and friends: you are probably going to be sick of seeing this project by the time I’m done talking about it.

A semester ago I took part in one of the most amazing experiences that will forever impact all of my future decisions. Cheesy to the extreme, but true. The SFU Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue program is more than just a 15-credit class. It helps shape your academics, business and life. And as the post-dialogue semester comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on my time in dialogue and all that I accomplished.

I didn’t know if a team of 16 could work together to organize and facilitate a public dialogue about faith and community. I am still in disbelief that in a few short hours, the members of the dialogue outside from the tight circle of 16 were able to engage with each other respectfully and openly. I was lucky to be the photographer, surprise surprise, and it gave me a unique way to observe and take in the events of the day. I got to learn something from every participant.

I was also able to grow by developing my own project. The world was basically my oyster. I felt the need to go back to my roots and find a way to possibly make an impact in the world of homelessness and poverty. I created a bit of a photo essay to share the stories of people connecting their faith to their work. I originally had intentions to take this project as far as it could go but these days I’ve thought that I should leave it as is. It taught me a lot but I think I need to move on to other exciting projects.

But I am still proud of my work and I doubt there will be a time I wouldn’t want to show it off. Please enjoy the photos and learn from the stories behind them. Check out Stories of Value: photos of faith in action. And good luck to all future Dialogue students. It is a wonderful, growing family.

Balloon Photoshoot

My passion for art and culture goes beyond observing and critique. I thoroughly enjoy creating my own art and media. After all, I plan on entering a career path that involves media creation for social change. Therefor I take every opportunity available to practise and expand my skills.

So when a friend of mine volunteered to model, I jumped at the chance. Currently working on a project involving balloons, I decided to play with the colours, shapes and associations with these playful objects once more. Originally I planned on going to Queen Elizabeth park but the weather didn’t cooperate with my plans. I think my solution worked out better than expected and I managed to get some awesome shots of the beautiful Bria McCall.

To see the full set of photos, check out my Flickr set. Otherwise take a look at some of my favourites below.
